Terraviva launches RURAL HOUSING II, a new international architecture competition that invites participants to reimagine a former Lombard stable as two contemporary homes through a sensitive adaptive reuse intervention…
Prizes up to 10.000 € will be awarded to the winners, selected by an international jury including Pedro Campos Costa (Campos Costa Arquitetos), Francesca Bulgarelli (SpazioA), Melis Mısırlıoğlu G. (Outgrow Studio) and Davide Casaletto (Fluidiforme), among others.
BRIEF
Rural Housing II challenges participants to transform the former Stable of Cascina Maestà, a historic farmhouse still active in the countryside of Pavia, into two contemporary duplex dwellings. As one of the last unused buildings within the complex, the Stable offers a unique opportunity to complete the evolution of the Cascina while preserving the identity of one of Lombardy’s most characteristic rural typologies.
The competition invites architects to explore how adaptive reuse can establish a meaningful dialogue between tradition and contemporary living. Participants will be asked to rethink the existing volume as two generous family homes, carefully organising the spaces across both floors while responding to the building’s orientation, the relationship with the historic aia and the surrounding agricultural landscape.

GUIDELINES
Beyond the required residential programme, designers are encouraged to enrich the proposal with additional functions capable of creating unique living environments tailored to modern lifestyles. Interior design, material choices and the reinterpretation of the Stable’s original architectural features will play a fundamental role in defining the character of each home.
Rather than preserving the past as a static memory, Rural Housing II seeks proposals capable of giving new purpose to an authentic piece of Italian rural heritage, demonstrating how thoughtful architecture can transform a former agricultural building into an inspiring example of contemporary countryside living.
REQUESTED MATERIAL
Two A1 panels (59,4 x 84,1 cm – horizontal) and a brief text describing the proposal (250-500 words).
