The Architecture of Play 2026–27 is a kindergarten design challenge that asks participants to rethink how architecture can shape the way children learn, play, explore, and interact. Designed for children aged 3–6, the competition invites participants to create safe, stimulating, and inspiring learning environments where curiosity becomes part of everyday experience.
Participants are encouraged to explore child psychology, human scale, play-based learning, natural light and ventilation, sustainability, landscape, and meaningful connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. The design should move beyond conventional classrooms and transform corridors, courtyards, walls, and shared spaces into opportunities for discovery, creativity, interaction, and play.
With no stylistic restrictions, participants are free to develop their own architectural language and reinterpret the relationship between learning, play, and architecture. The competition is open to undergraduate design students, with separate categories for 1st–2nd year and 3rd–5th year students. Category 1 submissions are hand-drafted, while Category 2 submissions may be digital.
