OVERVIEW
This competition challenges architects and designers to redefine the traditional Moroccan courtyard house (riad) for contemporary living. Proposals must design a sustainable, single-family residence in Marrakech where a central courtyard acts as the environmental, social, and spatial heart of the home.
DESIGN REQUIREMENTS & OBJECTIVES
– Program: Single-family residence with a central courtyard as the primary organizational element.
– Site: A hypothetical urban lot within or near the Medina of Marrakech (hot/dry summers, cool winter nights, high density).
– Key Focus Areas: Integration of indoor/outdoor spaces, effective passive cooling, natural daylighting, privacy, and local material inspiration.
– Budget: Strict $120,000 USD construction cap (inclusive of materials, labor, systems, and landscaping).
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
– 1 x A1 Presentation Board (PDF format, minimum 150 dpi, max 20 MB).
– Must include: Design concept, site strategy, floor plans, sections, elevations, environmental strategies, and visualizations.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
Submissions will be judged on conceptual strength, architectural quality, environmental/passive cooling performance, spatial efficiency, and the innovative reinterpretation of traditional Moroccan architecture.
