Reuse Italy announced for the “Reuse the Abbey” Competition!
We are proud to announce the results of the “Reuse the Abbey” architecture competition, focusing on the revitalization of the ancient Abbey of Santa Maria del Piano in Pozzaglia Sabina (Rieti).
Built in the 11th century — and, according to legend, established by Charlemagne in the 8th or 9th century — the Abbey was once an important Benedictine monastery, growing in significance throughout the 12th century before falling into decline and being abandoned by the monks towards the end of the Middle Ages.
The challenge posed to participants was to imagine a new life for this historic site: to transform it into a meditation center that can host yoga sessions, art performances, workshops, and other activities that foster tranquility and reflection.
We invite you to discover the winning and featured projects — and to see how architects responded to this unique challenge of honoring heritage while creating a space for the present and future.
