The Roman Theatre of Falerio Picenus, located along the Tenna river in Falerone (Marche), stands as a monumental remnant of classical engineering. Erected between the late Augustan era and the principate of Tiberius, the complex was integrated into a strategic regional road network. Its presence established the ancient colony as a primary center for civic prestige and imperial propaganda within the middle Adriatic area.
Architecturally, the building represents a masterclass in freestanding design. Unlike most regional theatres that relied on natural slopes, the Falerio theatre is fully self-supporting on a flat plain. Its precise semicircular layout, rhythmic arched vomitoria, and complex masonry give the ruin a powerful structural presence that exceeds its original theatrical purpose.
Following recent institutional efforts, the site is finally shifting from passive endurance toward active conservation and functional rebirth. Currently recognized as an exceptional asset of classical heritage, the complex remains a static monument awaiting a new contemporary purpose. The 15th edition of Reuse Italy promotes an international architecture competition to reinterpreting this archeological area – focusing specifically on the stage system – as an inclusive cultural center and performance park.
The deadline for project submissions is November 19th, 2026, and a single A1 sheet (59.4×84.1 cm) is required. The total prize pool is 5,000 euros. The international jury consists of Anteo Taro Boschi Sanada (KKAA), Javier Sánchez (JSa) and COMOCO.
Is it possible to reuse this magnificent roman theater? The answer to this question is in the hands of the architects, the engineers, and the students who will participate in this competition.
