Tavertet Design Process
Site Challenges :
Our architectural site was nestled in the picturesque pre-Pyrenees mountains, an enchanting yet challenging terrain characterized by its continuous elevation changes. This unique setting presented us with a compelling design puzzle – how to identify distinct spots within the site where architectural intervention could seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings while fostering meaningful connections between various functional elements. Navigating this elevation gradient became a central focus of our design process. We embarked on a meticulous exploration, scouring the site to pinpoint areas where the intervention would not only be feasible but also harmonious. The goal was to create a design that transcended the conventional notion of a hotel, embracing the landscape and weaving it into the very fabric of our architectural vision.
In our quest to achieve this, we developed a comprehensive strategy for architectural connections. Each use of the space was carefully considered in relation to its surroundings, and pathways, both physical and visual, were established to unite these disparate elements. This intricate web of connections aimed not only to enhance the functionality of the site but also to engage visitors in an immersive journey through the natural and built environments. Ultimately, our design process in the pre-Pyrenees mountains was an exercise in striking a delicate balance between honoring the site’s inherent beauty and addressing the practical challenges it posed. It underscored the importance of thoughtful site analysis, creative problem-solving, and the seamless integration of architecture with the surrounding landscape. This process, which challenged us to think beyond the conventional, resulted in a design that celebrates the dynamic interplay between nature and human ingenuity.
Initial Design Process :
Our initial design process unfolded with a back-to-basics approach, rooted in the fundamental act of cutting a section through the site. This served as our canvas, the starting point from which our creative journey would flourish. Armed with this foundational understanding of the site’s contours and potential, we embarked on a series of sketches that would lay the groundwork for our architectural vision.
Inspiration flowed from diverse sources, and one particularly influential muse was the art of interlocking Japanese joinery. We were captivated by the finesse and precision exhibited in these age-old techniques. Drawing from this rich tradition, we endeavored to infuse our design with the same sense of artistry and connection. Our sketches evolved into a tapestry of interlocking elements, where overhangs and connections within our urban context were meticulously woven together. This interplay of lines, angles, and forms was not only an architectural endeavor but also a nod to the harmonious coexistence of tradition and innovation.
As we delved deeper into this design process, we found ourselves bridging the gap between the natural and the man-made, the traditional and the contemporary. It was a journey of exploration and discovery, where each sketch served as a stepping stone toward realizing a design that seamlessly integrated with its surroundings while paying homage to timeless craftsmanship. In this way, our initial design process was a testament to the power of simplicity and inspiration drawn from diverse cultures. It exemplified our commitment to creating an architectural masterpiece that would not only capture the imagination but also stand as a symbol of innovation and respect for the heritage of design.
Understanding our users :
Understanding our users is a paramount aspect of our design philosophy. We recognize that comprehending the unique needs and preferences of our clients and visitors is a cornerstone of successful architectural endeavors. In our approach, we allocate significant importance, approximately 50 percent, to gaining insights into the users of our spaces. To effectively cater to the diverse user base of our project, we divided them into two distinct categories. The first category encompasses families seeking a haven for weekend getaways, where the emphasis lies on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. For these users, our design prioritizes coziness and an open ambiance, fostering an environment conducive to relaxation and togetherness. The second category comprises adventure enthusiasts, individuals and groups drawn to more exhilarating and extreme experiences. Our architectural approach for this segment aligns with their dynamic and adventurous spirit, offering spaces and features that cater to their specific needs and preferences.
Designing Experiences :
Entrance Wing: The entrance wing served as the gateway to our serene architectural experience. A gracefully designed walkway ramp seamlessly integrated with the site’s rugged terrain. This deliberate approach allowed visitors to connect with the natural surroundings as they embarked on their journey. The traversing pattern established anticipation and set a tranquil tone for their exploration.
Reception and Restaurant Wing: Positioned strategically to maximize serene vistas, this wing offered unobstructed views of the serene reservoir lake. Architecturally, it emphasized open spaces and panoramic views, enabling guests to fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the environment. The design aimed to create an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, enhancing the overall dining and reception experience.
Outdoor Experience: Meandering ramps extended from the main structure, harmoniously blending with the natural topography. These ramps provided a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Leading to a performance area, they allowed guests to engage with nature in an open-air setting. Simultaneously, the ramps guided visitors to their suites, ensuring that the design seamlessly integrated indoor comfort with the serene outdoor surroundings.
Meditation Chamber: A standout feature, the meditation chamber was designed as a sanctuary for contemplation and disconnection from the urban hustle. Accessible through a unique cliff-hanging structure, this space embraced raw elements like rock flooring and introduced natural light through carefully placed slits. The design aimed to foster a profound sense of serenity, encouraging users to reconnect with nature within this tranquil enclave.
Viewing Gallery: The circular architectural masterpiece of the viewing gallery was meticulously crafted to provide a breathtaking panorama of the valley. Positioned at the project’s apex, it allowed users to ascend and gain a unique perspective of the natural landscape. The design of this gallery aimed to create an awe-inspiring moment of serenity, accentuating the beauty of the surroundings.
In summary, our design process prioritized creating immersive and serene experiences for users. Each element was carefully designed to seamlessly blend with the rugged landscape while providing opportunities for visitors to connect with nature and find tranquility within the architectural spaces.
Connection of Spaces :
The art of connecting nodes within a substantial site or complex program holds immense significance in architectural design. Our approach centered on envisioning these connections as pathways that a user might traverse. We recognized the critical importance of contemplating these journeys and incorporating a sensory experience that went beyond mere physical movement.
In our design process, we elevated the role of light and texture as fundamental elements in crafting these connections. These elements were meticulously woven into the fabric of our design, ensuring that the journey between spaces was not just a transition but a sensory exploration. The play of light and the tactile qualities of various textures created a dynamic and immersive experience for users as they moved through the site.
A distinctive feature we embraced was the change in scale and the deliberate introduction of non-linear pathways. We envisioned the site as a multi-level landscape, intentionally avoiding the predictability of a straight walkway. This shift in perspective added layers of complexity and intrigue to the user’s experience, highlighting the diverse possibilities that emerged when considering a site in terms of levels and dimensions. The result was a design that accentuated the entire program, fostering an environment where exploration and discovery were integral to the architectural narrative.
In summary, our design philosophy revolved around creating connections that transcended functional transitions. These pathways were envisioned as experiential journeys, guided by light and texture, and enriched by changes in scale and non-linearity. By redefining the concept of circulation, we sought to offer users a dynamic and engaging architectural experience that resonated with the unique character of the site.
Advice
Selection: Selecting the right design competition is a pivotal decision for students and participants. Our advice is to choose topics or ideas that resonate with your personal passions and interests. When you’re genuinely enthusiastic about a subject, it keeps your design creativity and enthusiasm alive throughout the entire process. By pursuing topics that you genuinely care about, you’ll find the motivation to delve deep into the subject matter, continuously refine your ideas, and ultimately produce designs that are not only technically sound but also infused with your personal passion and creativity. This approach can lead to truly remarkable and impactful design outcomes in any competition or project.
It’s important to recognize that good ideas often evolve and mature over time. They are not born fully formed but are built upon and layered with careful consideration, logic, and thoughtful insights. So, don’t be discouraged by initial concepts that may seem simple or incomplete. Instead, view them as the foundation upon which you can construct more complex and innovative solutions.
Approach to Design: Design processes can indeed be highly individualistic, and each designer may have a unique approach. However, establishing initial principles is crucial to guide your creative journey. Here are some exercises that have proven valuable in our design process:
Word Play: Begin by jotting down keywords or concepts related to your design idea. Then, explore synonyms and related terms for each word. This exercise encourages multidirectional thinking and expands your pool of ideas, allowing you to explore various facets of your concept.
Sketching with Bold Markers: Embracing large markers during the early stages of sketching can be liberating. It frees you from getting bogged down by intricate details too soon. These initial sketches serve as a canvas for your broadest ideas, which can later be refined as your concept evolves.
Presentation Exploration: In the modern design landscape, there are numerous ways to present your ideas, thanks to technology. It’s essential to experiment with various presentation methods and discover which one resonates with you the most. Whether it’s 3D modeling, digital renderings, physical models, or hand-drawn illustrations, finding your preferred presentation style can enhance your confidence in communicating your design concepts effectively.
Ultimately, the key is to strike a balance between structure and creativity in your design process. While these exercises provide valuable guidance and spark creativity, they should be flexible enough to adapt to the unique demands of each project.
